Economic Boost for Mendoza

Lieutenant Governor Hebe Casado, who presided over this historic session, highlighted the importance of the approval, stating, “Today is a special day for Mendoza. With the authorization of these 34 projects, we are moving towards an economic model that will generate new opportunities for many people in Mendoza, especially in areas that have long sought economic growth,” she expressed on social media. Casado also emphasized that copper, a strategic resource in the transition to cleaner energy, will be essential for attracting investment and generating employment in the province.

A Path Toward Responsible Mining

The lieutenant governor underscored that the project has been carried out with transparency and responsibility, listening to the concerns of the Mendoza community. She assured that mining in the region will be conducted with high standards of safety and environmental respect, clarifying that "Mendoza is not issuing a blank check" but rather adopting a clear policy with skilled technical teams and a vision of sustainable growth. To move forward with future exploitation phases, companies will be required to submit new environmental impact declarations, subject to legislative approval, ensuring ongoing oversight.

Support and Dissenting Voices

Outside the Legislature, the approval was supported by construction workers and pro-mining groups, while some environmentalists protested in the streets. The project received support from various political forces, including Cambia Mendoza and representatives from the PJ (Justicialist Party), though three legislators opposed the initiative.

Toward a New Era of Mining

Jerónimo Shantal, head of Mendoza's Mining Directorate, emphasized that this approval marks the beginning of a significant phase for the development of metal mining in the province, which will translate into jobs, opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses, and an economic boost for key sectors. “With this approval, Mendoza positions itself as an attractive destination for mining investment, creating growth opportunities at both the provincial and national levels,” Shantal concluded.

“This historic step sets Mendoza on a path to sustainable mining, in alignment with the demands of an economy that prioritizes energy transition and job creation,” he added.
